I am currently studying in Singapore Management University and I am still taking my own sweet time in deciding what I will be majoring in. Political Science or Sociology? I think if given another choice, I would rather be majoring in culinary arts or dietary nutrition instead. :p
I personally think modern society does not celebrate the term ‘domesticated’, because it’s economical returns don’t match those in the business working field. And because of the fast-paced lifestyle that comes along with the advent of technology (someone who is halfway around the world can read this!), I see taking time off to cook or to sit down to a good meal with family and friends as something that I really treasure.
Perhaps there is a paradox here; enjoying the quirks of being domesticated is a sexist, largely feminine attempt that is slowly being recognized as a way to escape from the crutches of the hectic, complex lifestyle that modernity entails. Being able to cook, or work the sewing machine is being seen as an avenue for a relaxing time out, simply because those activities can be time consuming, in a leisurely manner.
That is basically why I have this passion for food (and DIY crafts), together with the fact that it allows me to get in touch with my feminine habits passed down from my ancestors. OK I AM PULLING A LEG HERE. While Martha Steward is not really my idol, I’ve got to admit that the media is sort of glamorizing the domesticated lifestyle isn’t it?
Other than my interest in all this delectable and exciting to the olfactory sense and taste buds, the need to appease my visual senses means that bursts of colour, patterns, clean lines and various texture (i.e. fashion/interior design/all things beautiful to the beholder) gets my heart racing. I wish I am a pro-photographer, one who has a keen eye for detail and the extraordinary in the seemingly ordinary. Art galleries, museums, little alleyways and shophouses that have thankfully, been untouched by modernization, French films, quirky vintage pieces covering dresses, accessories and bags, eccentric/individual style, dreaming that I can live my life like a tour guide on Discovery Travel & Living, cracking my head over a Sudoku puzzle are a few of my interests.
My idea of a dream holiday would be a tough fight between backpacking in Europe with as little cash on me but maximizing the cultural/social potential of what I can actually encounter, and a luxurious holiday in Greece (or any Mediterranean country for that matter). Going to a Scandinavian country or to the US to see the Grand Canyon or on an African safari sounds enticing too. Actually, going anywhere on Earth would be a great exciting experience if it is not the typical city shopping trip. And oh, I love sightseeing. Anything from natural wonders to historical monuments. Sometimes I even feel like a tourist in my own country as I explore different areas that I don’t usually frequent!
One of my not-so-good habits is that I buy way too many books. It is not-so-good because it is definitely way faster than I can read them, but not a bad habit because reading is good in expanding our mind and soul, yes? I read mostly fiction (but grew out of the chick flick stage), and because of that second-hand bookstores is another favourite place of mine. Besides, that’s a little eco-friendly way of saving the trees (and some extra cash too). I have been reading since I was a kid, and Enid Blyton was and is still one of my favourite authors. Margaret Atwood too.
I enjoy running, something which I did not foresee myself actually relishing if you had ask what my hobbies were when I was in secondary school. While, coming from an all-girl’s school then, having P.E. under the blazing sun was something most of us dread (urgh perspiration!), unless the students were engaged in a sport. Running clears my mind (hurray for endorphins) and makes me feel accomplished when I complete a certain distance within a certain time. Well, but if it’s a rainy day, I LOVE lazing around at home and staring into space. That, I kid you not.
How can I forget this section…Some favourite foods (an inexhaustible list, I reckon) includes a hearty, warm bowl of oatmeal (which you will see often in this blog), salads, popiah, sushi, Aglio Olio pasta, all things eggplant/spinach/mango and Ciabatta bread. Gastronomical guilty pleasures include Cedele’s carrot cake, cheesecake, mee pok and every girl’s (and boys too) decadent love- chocolate.
Well, that’s it about me, I will update once more inspiration hits.
Thanks for visiting my technological abode!
